What is a sweepstakes casino?
A sweepstakes casino runs casino-style games on two virtual currencies. Gold Coins have no cash value. Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for cash or gift cards. Because a free entry route is always available, these sites operate under US sweepstakes law rather than under a state gambling licence.
That legal distinction is the whole model. It is also why the ground keeps shifting: a state does not need to change its gambling law to shut the category down, it only needs to decide that the free entry route is a fiction.
Where should you start?
Start with whichever of these three questions is actually blocking you.
You want your money faster
Payment method decides speed far more than brand does. Crypto settles in minutes; bank and e-wallet take days.
You got a redemption and now it is April
Redemptions are taxable whether or not a form arrives. The form threshold changed for 2026.
Which sweepstakes casino pays out fastest?
On our tests, crypto redemptions clear in about eight minutes and card or e-wallet redemptions take one to three business days. The gap between payment methods is larger than the gap between operators, so pick the method first and the brand second.
| Operator | Fastest method | Median time | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stake.us | Crypto | 8 min | 25 SC |
| McLuck | Skrill | 29 hrs | 10 SC |
| Pulsz | Bank transfer | 2.1 days | 50 SC |
| Chumba Casino | Gift card | 3.4 days | 10 SC |

Is it legal where you live?
It depends on your state, and the answer changed for millions of people during 2025 and 2026. Roughly 26 states remain open. About 14 are closed, either through a law written specifically for sweepstakes or through a regulator applying existing gambling law.
- Closed by statute. California, New York, Connecticut, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Tennessee.
- Closed by enforcement. Idaho, Michigan, Washington. No sweepstakes-specific law, but regulators apply existing gambling statutes.
- Open. Most other states, including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.
California is the change that mattered most. AB 831 was signed on 11 October 2025 and took effect on 1 January 2026, closing the single largest state market in the category. Several states also wrote liability for marketing affiliates into the text, not only for operators.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check the current statute for your state before you play.
Common questions
Are sweepstakes casinos legal in the United States?
They operate legally in roughly 26 states. About 14 states are now closed, either through a specific ban or through existing gambling law. California closed on 1 January 2026 under AB 831.
Do sweepstakes casinos pay real money?
Yes. Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for cash or gift cards once you clear the playthrough requirement and pass identity verification. What varies is how long it takes and what methods are offered.
How long does a sweepstakes casino payout take?
Crypto redemptions typically settle in minutes. Bank transfers and e-wallets typically take one to three business days. Your first redemption always takes longer, because identity verification runs before the payment does.
Is a purchase required to play?
No. A free method of entry is legally required. In practice that means daily login bonuses, social media giveaways and postal mail-in requests, all of which award Sweeps Coins without payment.
What is the difference between Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins?
Gold Coins are play money and can never be redeemed. Sweeps Coins are the promotional currency you can redeem for prizes after meeting a playthrough requirement, usually one time through.
Do I have to pay tax on redemptions?
Yes. Redeemed Sweeps Coins are taxable income regardless of amount. Whether a form arrives is a separate question: the 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC reporting threshold rose from $600 to $2,000 for payments made after 31 December 2025.
Can I use a VPN to play from a banned state?
No. Every major operator prohibits it. The usual outcome is account closure and forfeiture of any unredeemed balance, and identity verification at redemption surfaces the mismatch anyway.
What happens to my balance if an operator leaves my state?
Operators normally open a redemption window before switching off play, letting existing users cash out remaining Sweeps Coins. Gold Coins have no value and are simply lost. Windows have run from a few days to several weeks, so move quickly when an exit is announced.
Why is my redemption still pending?
Almost always identity verification. A first redemption triggers a document check, and a mismatch between your ID, your payment method and your registered address will hold it. Second and later redemptions from the same account are much faster.
How does Social Casino Index make money?
Some links here are affiliate links, and we may be paid when a reader signs up. Payment never changes a rating or a measured figure. We fund our own redemptions and publish the raw data so anyone can check our numbers.
